A rare afternoon show…this Saturday View Comments

imageThis Saturday afternoon, the Bright Men of Learning are playing outdoors at the Shady Tavern in the Heights. If, like us, you’re kinda old and can’t hang with the late night shows so much anymore, you should definitely come out. This rare afternoon show is a perfect opportunity to see us play the rock music.

One odd thing about this show is that we don’t know who we’re playing with. Nor do we know exactly what time we’re playing. That’s because it’s a Secret Saturday Show. I’ll let the people behind SSS explain:

Secret Saturday Shows is a collective bringing Houston, Texas a new way to see shows. Every Saturday between the hours of 2 and 5 there will be 3 – 4 bands performing live at our outdoor location. The venue is Shady Tavern at 1206 W. 20th in the heights. Doors will open at 12 noon with djs playing till the bands.ALL SHOWS ARE FREE.There is beer and wine available.

The bands playing will know they are performing but will not who else will be playing. Schedules will never be posted because they will always be the same time. The plan here is to start a community of music lovers who come out and check out music. Not a band, but music in general. Who knows who you might see. Shows are going to be a mix of genres.

SHOWS EVERY SATURDAY RAIN OR SHINE. there is a nice room the show will move to if it rains. also, smoking is allowed since it is outside and the tavern has WIFI. what more do you need on a saturday afternoon?

So that’s the deal. Again with the details:

The Houston Happy Hour Invitational returns View Comments

Remember when I was Custom Drinker? Remember when I used to invite my pals out to play early evening shows at the Proletariat? And the shows were free and didn’t last all that long, so everyone could get their cheap drink on and hear the jams before heading home early?

I do. But at some point my evening classes kicked in and I had to abandon my booking duties after a year and a half of really awesome once-a-month shows.

Well, to honor the Proletariat in its last days, it was suggested I do one last H3I. And so I am.

I’m pleased to announce that my friends from AWESOME! have agreed to play. They’ve done it twice before, I think, and their H3I performances have always been pretty whip-ass.

Also, I’ve managed to get John Sears to play. Despite being my roommate, I never was able to talk him into playing the first time, but he’s gonna chip in with some classic Sears jams.

Closing things out will be the Jonx. They’re one of my favorite Houston bands, and they’re always capable of unleashing a monster live performance that will crush you into reverence.

I can’t wait.

Next Monday will be an awesome start to the week.

Video: Far and Away (LIVE at The Proletariat) View Comments

Here is a video with surprisingly decent audio, which was the handiwork of Ramon Medina (Linus Paul Quartet, NonAlignment Pact, Free Press.) The song is our guitarmony-laced, über hit, Far and Away from our soon-to-be-finished record. Ramon also commented on the show in The Free Press’ blog, where lately he’s been doing some incredible coverage of Houston’s local shows. Look at the other videos he has posted on YouTube. The man has seriously been getting out and documenting shows. Also for you video nurds like myself, do yourself a favor and look at his video Young Goodbunny Brown. So good.
